= Afternoon with Carlos & his adventures traveling from New York to Atlanta and back.

First henna of the summer.
We passed a number of women at Union Square doing henna, but there was one who had a sign about fighting modern day slavery. After Carlos headed back uptown, I turned around and found her. We talked for half an hour about henna & human trafficking, exchanged information, & had her do my hand (first time on the hand -- I always get my feet done but I had Keds on). She told me all the money she was making that day would go to a coalition to fight slavery in Florida.

Spent the night [into morning] sitting on the rooftop of Brass Monkey, overlooking the Hudson River, with KP, Katie, & occasionally Miss Ireland. Not the best rooftop I've been to but it had a good vibe for the most part.
Glad you enjoyed your trip to NYC- what a fine city it is. I wanted to comment on the matter of human trafficking and modern day slavery. I'm an intern at Free the Slaves, an organization in Washington DC working to end human trafficking and modern day slavery in the next 25 years. I understand how coming to grips with the size of modern slavery can leave people feeling overwhelmed. But there's an interesting paradox
ReplyDeleteabout the 27 million slaves in the world - yes, it is a huge number, the largest ever in human history, but it is also the smallest fraction of the human population to ever be in slavery. Likewise, the amount of money slaves pump into the world economy is big, around $50 billion a year, but it is also the smallest fraction of the global economy to ever be represented by slave labor. The truth is that slavery has been pushed to the edge of its own extinction and working together we can tip it over the brink. There’s a law against slavery in every country, and more and more people are united in wanting to end it. I hope you'll visit and share our website - www.freetheslaves.net, and have a look at Kevin Bales' book on how we can bring slavery to an end in 25 years, it is called: Ending Slavery: How We Free Today's Slaves.
Stay well, and stay observant.
