Words that don't exist in the English language

In the midst of catching up on some blog reading, I came across this entry from Christine.

words that don’t exist in the english language
INTERESTING.

L’esprit de escalier: (French) The feeling you get after leaving a conversation, when you think of all the things you should have said. Translated it means “the spirit of the staircase.”

Waldeinsamkeit: (German) The feeling of being alone in the woods.

Meraki: (Greek) Doing something with soul, creativity, or love.

Forelsket: (Norwegian) The euphoria you experience when you are first falling in love.

Gheegle: (Filipino) The urge to pinch or squeeze something that is unbearably cute.

Pochemuchka: (Russian) A person who asks a lot of questions.

Pena ajena: (Mexican Spanish) The embarrassment you feel watching someone else’s humiliation.

Cualacino: (Italian) The mark left on a table by a cold glass.

Ilunga: (Tshiluba, Congo) A person who is ready to forgive any abuse for the first time, to tolerate it a second time, but never a third time.

I like "meraki."

Sunitha Krishnan: Sex slavery.

This gets me:
"We think it is easy money. We think it is shortcut. We think the person likes to do what she's doing. But the extra bonuses that she gets is various infections, sexually transmitted infections, HIV, AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhea, you name it, substance abuse, drugs, everything under the sun. And one day she gives up on you and me, because we have no options for her. And therefore she starts normalizing this exploitation. She believes, 'Yes, this is it, this is what my destiny is about.' And this is normal, to get raped by 100 men a day. And it's abnormal to live in a shelter. It's abnormal to get rehabilitated."

At the end, Sunitha Krishnan adds:
"I'm not asking you all to become Mahatma Gandhis or Martin Luther Kings, or Medha Patkars, or something like that. I'm asking you, in your limited world, can you open your minds? Can you open your hearts? Can you just encompass these people too? Because they are also a part of us. They are also part of this world. I'm asking you, for these children, whose faces you see, they're no more. They died of AIDS last year. I'm asking you to help them, accept as human beings, not as philanthropy, not as charity, but as human beings who deserve all our support. I'm asking you this because no child, no human being, deserves what these children have gone through."

Fishing industry

"Social entrepreneurs are not content just to give a fish or to teach how to fish. They will not rest until they have revolutionized the fishing industry." - Bill Drayton, founder of Ashoka.

Is it time to MakeSense yet? (Almost!)

Me: Do you think I overthink too much? I think I'm overly emotional. Sigh.
David: sometimes u think too much. sometimes u don't think enough.
Me: Haha, touche.

Monday music: Delphic, Paper Route, Kurt Schneider.

I quickly stopped into a store yesterday to grab an article of clothing and I happened to have heard Doubt by Delphic Thumbs up.

Right after, Garland & I dropped into a restaurant to grab a snack and we stumbled upon Carousel by Paper Route. Also thumbs up.

Lastly, I was perusing YouTube and decided to stop by Kurt Schneider's channel to see if Sam Tsui had anything new and interesting. My eyes immediately caught Follow You Into The Dark by Death Cab but this time, Kurt was covering it. Never having heard him sing, I clicked it.

I swear, Yale produces the most talented students.

Love much?

Merry Christmas, from Munny to you.

One of the 2Tone Dunny artists Chuckboy made a festive Munny for a Blick Art catalog (which happens to be choice of art stores too). Love it! I definitely want that teddy Dunny too.

OK Go: Last Leaf

OK Go is notorious for their great music videos. It's not quite Arcade Fire but OK Go's new stop-motion music video will blow your mind in another way. They used over 2,000 pieces of toast to create a short story that tells a tale in 15 toasts per second.

I think this is pretty amazing. Thanks, Jeannie, for the find!

RockMelt: new browser!

RockMelt launched its beta version today. I think I want...even though I dislike using Facebook. But Tony is very convincing.

Read more about it on the link above. Faster, easier searches, integration with social networks and RSS feeds, & it still has an Icognito mode.

[edit] About 12 hours after this post, I got my RockMelt invite from Mark! Sweet.

Christianity in Orissa, India.

Jane sent this to me just now.

I remember back in 2007 when I first heard about the orphanage burnings and the attacks against Christians in the Orissa region. The reports on the persecutions continued into 2008 when I lived in my tiny post-it covered apartment. I made sure that a post-it went up that said "Orissa" on it. Sadly, I've since moved to 2 different apartments and an Orissa post-it never went back up in either of them. Tomorrow when I return to Manhattan (from my one night retreat to the Other Island), I need to remember to put one up.

Red canvas bag.

Want: this tubular red canvas bag.

Cutest costume of 2010.

Michael as a mailman! His mom made that mail truck for him and he drove house to house and walked up to each home to pick up his candy. Adorable!

Best: his mom also sewed a stuffed dog to the back of his leg, as if a dog were biting him. Hahaha. Love it.
